Lee's Summit Police Department K9 Unit |
| The Lee's
Summit Police K9 Unit has been in existence since 1991.
The mission of the K9 Unit is to support
the patrol and investigative divisions by utilizing the K9's working
abilities to make the officer's duties easier and safer.
Since it's inception the K9 Unit has had
four police dogs;
-
Canine Caiy - German
Shepherd (GSD)
Caiy served the Lee's Summit Police Department from 1991 - 1996.
Caiy's loyal service to the citizen's of Lee's Summit was cut short in
1996 when he was diagnosed with a degenerative hip disease. Caiy
was retired and as his hips grew worse he had to be put to rest in 1997.
Caiy will forever be remembered for his great stature both in size and
personality. He was a true and faithful servant to the Lee's
Summit Citizens, the Police Department and his partner Officer Mike
Childs.

-
Canine Ben - (GSD)
Canine Ben served the citizens of Lee's Summit from 1997-2000.
Ben is a Czechoslovakian born German Shepherd and was one of two dogs
purchased to replace K9 Caiy. Ben was certified in both Patrol
(tracking, building & area search, criminal apprehension) and Narcotics
Detection techniques. Ben's handler, Officer Mitch Wright left the
department for the private sector in 2000 and at that time was allowed
to purchase Ben. Since that time Ben has become a family protector
and he, along with his partner, are living the easy life of retirement.

-
Canine Charrid (pronounced
sharr-ed) - (GSD)
Canine Charrid began serving the citizens of Lee's Summit in
1997. Charrid, an East-German bloodline German Shepherd was purchased in
1997 as one of the two dogs purchased in '97. K9 Charrid was
certified in all areas of Patrol and Narcotics Detection. Canine
Charrid remained in service with the department, patrolling the streets
of Lee's Summit, conducting public demonstrations for civic & school
groups and even searching the lockers of the Junior/Senior High Schools
in Lee's Summit, until 2003.
In August of 2003 K9 Charrid was retired from active duty. Charrid
received a retirement party complete with gifts, etc... from friends and
local businesses. Read the story as told in the Lee's Summit
Journal HERE.
Since his retirement Charrid has been truly enjoying the good life,
living at home and relaxing with Officer Inglima and his family.

- Canine Dik Justice - (GSD)
K9 Justice began his training with Officer Inglima following
Charrid's retirement. Justice is a German Shepherd bred in
Hungary and trained locally by Von
Henger Kennels in Kingsville, MO. Officer Inglima and K9
Justice hit the streets in September of 2003 and are looking forward to
a long and prosperous career together.
